Homemade Pizza Dough {GF & DF}

Every great pizza night starts with a yummy crust!

While there is a wide selection available of pre-made gluten free crusts and a variety of frozen pizza brands, there are a few things that steer me away from these options:

  1. The price. We have a big family and paying ten dollars or more for a small pre-made crust or frozen pizza is just not in our budget. We would need about 6 of them to feed everyone!
  2. The ingredients. Starches, preservatives, flavorings, soy & whey are just a few of the nutritionally void ingredients I notice when looking at the long ingredient list on some of these products. On top of that, there are only a select few that don’t contain dairy.
  3. The Taste. If we’re going to splurge on pizza night, it better taste good! We’ve tried just about every pizza option out there and most of the time, it’s like biting into a flat piece of cardboard. Gluten free food has come a long way since my daughter’s celiac diagnosis 7 years ago, but pre-made pizza is one thing they still need to work on!

Of course there are times in our busy lives when convenience wins. When this happens, we opt for a higher quality option such as Simple Mills pizza crust mix.

More restaurants are now offering gluten free pizzas as well, but because of the high risk of cross-contamination(with toppings especially), we stay safe and save money by baking our pizzas at home.

This pizza dough recipe is quick, easy and absolutely delicious! It’s also very versatile and can be used for calzones, stromboli or garlic bread.

Homemade Pizza Dough {GF & DF}

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Bob’s Red Mill 1 to 1 Flour
  • 2 tbsp Sugar
  • 1 tbsp Instant Rise Yeast
  • 2 tsp Baking Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 2 tbsp Oil
  • 2 tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1/2-3/4 cup Warm Water

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and salt. Mix and set aside.
  2. Heat the water to warm and pour into a measuring cup. Stir in sugar and yeast. Let sit a few minutes until it starts to bubble.
  3. Meanwhile, add eggs, oil and apple cider vinegar to a mixing bowl.
  4. After the yeast mixture starts bubbling, add the liquid to the eggs.
  5. Mix on medium and then slowly add the flour mixture.
  6. Continue mixing until a dough forms.
  7. Let dough sit for at least 15 minutes.
  8. Preheat oven to 400°
  9. Flour a baking sheet or line with parchment paper.
  10. Flatten and shape the dough to the pizza shape you desire. Flour your hands if the dough gets sticky.
  11. Bake for 5-7 minutes then top with your favorite sauce and toppings.
  12. Bake an additional 15-20 minutes or until crust is golden. For an extra crispy crust, remove the pizza from the baking pan and bake directly on the oven rack for the last 10 minutes.

I double this recipe to feed our hungry family of six! Our recommended Dairy-Free cheeses include So Delicious Dairy Free Cheese Shreds & Trader Joes Almond Mozzerella Style Shreds.
