Easy Irish soda bread recipe made with almond flour. Gluten Free, Grain Free, and dairy free

What is Irish Soda Bread?

The essential ingredients in a traditional Irish Soda Bread are flour, baking soda, and buttermilk. The acid in the buttermilk reacts with the baking soda to create the bread's leavening. This is what gives the bread it's name, "soda bread"!

The first time I tried an Irish soda bread was actually when I visited Dublin many years ago while studying abroad in college. That was LONG before our gluten-free days!

Our adaptation on the traditional Irish-inspired bread is gluten, dairy and grain-free, packed with nutrition and loaded with flavor. This is the best soda bread recipe!  It's perfectly crusty on the outside while soft and delicious on the inside. This healthy soda bread recipe is perfect for your St. Patrick's Day celebrations or any time throughout the year!

How to Make Almond Flour Soda Bread

  • Whisk together the dry ingredients into a large bowl, then in a separate smaller bowl, combine the eggs, milk & vinegar and let sit for 5 minutes.
  • Pour the egg mixture into the dry ingredients and stir well.
  • Slowly whisk in the melted coconut oil until everything is well blended.
  • Shape and bake the loaf. Shape the dough into a flat, round ball. Using a sharp knife, cut two deep slashes, making a cross thoughout the top of the bread. Bake in the preheated oven 25-30 minutes until golden brown.

Storing this Gluten-Free Irish Soda Bread

This bread is best fresh out of the oven slathered with some butter, ghee, your favorite jam or a little honey drizzle on top!

It doesn't last long in our house, but if you do have leftovers,  place it in an airtight container or bag and store for up to 4 or 5 days. Reheat before serving.

For the 1/4 cup melted coconut oil, do you measure the 1/4 cup as a solid and then melt it?

Hey Sue, coconut oil should be the same equivalent whether melted or solid. It's about 4 tbsp for 1/4 cup. Hope that helps!

Is the inside “uncooked” soft with a crusty crust?

This bread was absolutely delicious. I used buttermilk instead of milk vinegar combo because I had it and used roasted almond oil, for the same reason. I added fresh blueberries instead of raisins, why, you guessed it, I had them. Baked for 30 minutes and oh my, scrumptious. Love the texture and wonderful flavor that the almond flour gives. I used a little vanilla and almond extract for some more flavor. Thank you for this delightful treat! Almond meal works in this too, used 1/2 of each, don’t need to tell you why!🤣😄

Sorry, but I don't think that would work in this grain-free version.
